So, I was wandering through the internet, as one does, looking for, I don't know, maybe validation in the form of a quiz telling me what kind of cheese I am (turns out, I'm a very pungent Gorgonzola). But instead, I stumbled across this whole world of... simple pencil drawings of roses. At first glance, I was like, "Okay, grandma, time to update your Instagram aesthetic." But then, something about the delicate lines and the grayscale shadows, it kind of drew me in (pun intended, obviously).
I mean, we've all seen those overly-filtered pictures of roses, right? The ones that scream "Valentine's Day gift shop" or "your aunt's dusty living room decor." But these pencil drawings, they felt different. Like, stripped down, vulnerable, raw. It got me thinking: maybe there's more to this whole rose-drawing thing than meets the eye (or the Instagram filter). Could this be the unexpected creative outlet I've been searching for all my life?
Now, I'm not exactly known for my patience, okay? I once gave up on a 1000-piece puzzle because I couldn't find the edge pieces (don't judge). But there was something strangely meditative about the idea of just slowing down, picking up a pencil, and trying to capture the subtle curves and textures of a rose. It felt almost...rebellious, in a world obsessed with instant gratification and perfectly curated feeds.
So, I did what any self-respecting millennial would do: I went down a deep, dark rabbit hole of YouTube tutorials and Pinterest boards. Turns out, people are REALLY into drawing roses with pencils. Who knew? There were videos breaking down the anatomy of a rose petal, diagrams explaining the art of shading, and entire Instagram accounts dedicated to, you guessed it, simple pencil drawings of roses. I was officially intrigued.
But the question remained: could a chronically impatient, aesthetically-challenged individual like myself actually learn to draw a rose that didn't look like a sad, wilting dandelion? And perhaps more importantly, why did I even care? Was this a cry for help? A sign of impending adulthood? Or maybe, just maybe, it was a sign that I was finally ready to embrace my inner artist, even if that artist was still using the same pack of Crayola pencils from elementary school. Only time, and a whole lot of eraser shavings, would tell.
